Where to stay in Menorca

por Postcards from IvI

Menorca is a privileged island located in the archipelago of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It has paradise beaches and charming towns, which is why it is one of the most chosen destinations for summer holidays in the country. In this post I tell you where to stay in Menorca, including recommendations for the best areas and hotels on the island.

Where should you stay in Menorca?

Despite being an island of about 700 km2, Menorca has many different areas. The best area to stay will depend on when you travel and the type of trip you want to do.

If you travel in summer and plan to spend your days at the beaches of Menorca, it will be convenient for you to stay in areas close to Cala Galdana or Cala en Bosc. If you are looking for a place close to the beaches but quiet at the same time, I recommend staying in areas like Son Bou or Cala en Porter.

On the other hand, if you are looking to be in an area with movement and nightlife, and you don’t care too much about the proximity to the beach, I would recommend staying in Ciutadella or Mahón, which are the biggest cities in Menorca.

Thinking of renting a car? I always use rentalcars.com, a website that compares the prices of all car rental companies and usually offers a lower price. I used it on my last trip to Menorca and I picked up the car at the airport.

Ciutadella is a city located on the west coast of Menorca. It is famous for its old town and its medieval streets. Staying in this area means being in the busiest area of the island and having a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops. As there is so much accommodation offer, it is possible to get cheaper prices.

There are some beaches close to Ciutadella, although the best ones are a little further away. Despite that, it is a good area to sleep as there is a wide variety of accommodation and the city is very beautiful.

Recommended hotels in Ciutadella:

If you travel to Menorca with the intention of discovering its paradisiacal beaches and calas, a good option is to stay in Cala Galdana. In this area there are some of the most beautiful beaches such as Cala Macarella, Cala Macaralleta, Cala Mitjana, etc. You will be close to all of them (you can even walk to some) and Cala Galdana also has many services and restaurants. Also, being such a popular place, it is well connected by bus with other sectors of the island.

Cala Galdana itself is very pretty and perfect for families.

Another very good option if you travel to Menorca during summer. These urbanisations are located on the south coast of the island and it is an area where you will find a wide variety of accommodation. You will also find restaurants and shops.

It is a quiet area but at the same time you will be very close to the Ciutadella, so it is considered one of the best areas to stay in Menorca. Of course, if you decide to stay in this area you will need a car to get afround the island and visit other beaches.

Binibeca is a small fishing village located south of Mahón. It is one of the most picturesque places on the island, famous for its white houses and labyrinthine streets. Binibeca Vell is the old town and it is the most beautiful area, although there are few accommodation options. In Binibeca Nou you will find more options for hotels and apartments, although prices are high (especially during the summer months). Binibeca is one of the most beautiful and recommended areas to stay in Menorca.

Mahón is the capital of Menorca. Here is the airport of the island. It is a city with all kinds of services, a very large port, many restaurants and bars. If you do not plan to rent a car on your trip, Mahón is a good area to stay in Menorca as it is well connected with the rest of the island’s sectors. The negative point of staying in Mahón is that it does not have a beach.

It is also a good option if you are looking for cheap accommodation as there is a wide range of accommodation for all types of travelers.

In the north of the island you can find Fornells, a very pretty fishing village ideal for those seeking tranquility as it is not a very touristy place. It is also an excellent place to enjoy the local gastronomy and try the lobster stew, the typical dish of Menorca.

Fornells does not have a beach but there are many beaches you can go to nearby in the north of the island.

If you are looking for a quiet area to enjoy the beach and at the same time have cheap accommodation options, your best option is to stay in Cala en Porter. It is located in the south of the island and is one of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca. It is also about a 15 minute drive from the airport. The cala has restaurants and services in the area.

So if you are looking for cheap accommodation in Menorca and at the same time you want to enjoy a beautiful beach, this is your place.
