Located at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, Andorra is a country with a surface area of barely 468 km², chosen by many to go skiing, visit its charming town, enjoy outdoor activities and go shopping.
Where to stay in Andorra
This post will be divided into 3 main sections according to the 3 ski centers in Andorra, which are: Grandvalira, Vallnord and Ordino. Today the 3 centers are unified under the same ski pass or ski pass that allows you to access any of the centers for the same price.
Living in Barcelona which is so close to Andorra, I visited the country several times for snowboarding and I consider it essential to stay in a hotel or apartment as close as possible to the ski center that you want to visit. This really makes a difference as it is very convenient and saves you time.
Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees, with more than 200 km of slopes. It is divided into 7 sectors, all connected to each other: Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Peretol, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa.
Encamp is one of the best areas in Andorra to stay if you plan to go skiing. Access to Grandvalira is via the Funicamp, a 6 km cable car that takes you from the center of Encamp to the ski resort.
Recommended accommodation in Encamp:
Canillo is another town in Andorra that has direct access to Grandvalira, although this is the smallest sector of the center. Canillo has all the services you may need such as restaurants and shops.
Recommended accommodation in Canillo:
$$ Hotel Ski Plaza & Wellness: I stayed at this hotel once and I recommend it. It is really practical if you are going skiing or snowboarding as it’s located close to Canilo access and has a storage room for boards and boots. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
3. El Tarter
El Tarter is one of the largest sectors in Grandvalira. It has two very large parkings at the bottom of the cable car and a famous après-ski spot. It is an ideal area for young people.
Recommended accommodation in El Tarter:
$ Mountain Hostel Tarter: a hostel with both private and shared rooms located 200 meters from the ski slopes. A young atmosphere, ideal if you’re traveling with friends. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
One of the best areas to stay if you are visiting Andorra to ski is Soldeu, in the parish of Canillo. Also in this area you will find many bars and restaurants. It is one of the places with the best accommodation, although they are also generally more expensive than other areas.
Recommended accommodation in Soldeu:
5. Pas de la Casa
Pas de la Casa is the closest area to France. It is the sector with the largest amount of accommodation and also a lot of after ski atmosphere. Particularly for me, it is an area that I didn’t like so much and I don’t recommend it as a first option because it is difficult to access and not as picturesque as other areas of Andorra. However, you can find very cheap accommodation so if you don’t want to spend too much it is the best area to stay in Andorra.
Recommended accommodation in Pas de la Casa:
The Ordino Arcalís ski resort is one of the best in Andorra, although it is much smaller than Grandvalira and less popular. Staying in Ordino is ideal if you are looking for tranquility, either it’s summer or winter. In this ski center the accommodations are a little further away than in the rest of the ski centers.
Recommended accommodation in Ordino:
$ Hotel Santa Bàrbara De La Vall D’ordino: a very cheap hotel. It is located 9 km from the ski resort access so you will have to use the car if you plan on skiing. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
$$ Hotel Coma: hotel located in a natural environment, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing. It has a swimming pool and tennis courts. It is located about 20 minutes by car from Ordino access. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
Vallnord ski resort is composed by two sectors (connected to each other): Pal and Arinsal. It is an ideal center for families and also if you are just starting ski or snowboard.
7. La Massana
La Massana is the largest town and has most services. In La Massana is also the highest peak in Andorra: Comapedrosa.
Recommended accommodation in La Massana:
$ Marco Polo: I stayed at this hotel on a snowboarding trip to Andorra and I recommend it if you are looking for a cheap place. It is located 500 meters from the Vallnord cable car. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
$$$ Hotel AnyosPark: I stayed in this hotel and I fully recommend it, especially if you are looking for a relaxing trip. The hotel has a restaurant, spa, gym, tennis and paddle courts, etc. It has classic hotel rooms and duplex apartments with kitchen, which are perfect if you are traveling in a group. The views of the hotel are incredible. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
Arinsal is a town in the parish of La Massana that has a direct cable car access to Vallnord, so it is an ideal area to stay if you are going to ski. It is a small but super picturesque town with several restaurants and bars.
Recommended accommodation in Arinsal:
$$ Hotel Princesa Parc: I stayed at this hotel and I really loved it’s location which is so close to Arinsal’s cable car. It has a spa and a game area which makes it perfect for families.Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
$$ Ushuaia: hotel located at the foot of Vallnord ski slopes. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
ANDORRA LA VELLA
9. Andorra la Vella, if you want to go sightseeing and shopping
Andorra la Vella is the capital and center of the country. Here you will find thousands of shops, perfumeries and shopping centers. It is the best area to stay if you do not plan to go skiing and instead are looking for sightseeing or shopping. There are many accommodation options for all budgets.
Recommended accommodation in Andorra la Vella:
$$ NH Andorra la Vella: this NH hotel has all the commodities and is located in one of the main streets of Andorra la Vella. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
$$$ Andorra Park Hotel: if you are looking for a shopping and relax trip, this is the perfect hotel. It is located a little further from the center surrounded by mountains and has spa and swimming pool. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
This parish is located next to Andorra la Vella and has one of the most important spas in Europe: Caldea. It is an area with a wide range of hotels and very similar to Andorra la Vella in terms of services.
Recommended accommodation in Escaldes-Engordany:
$$ Tulip Inn Andorra Delfos: a basic hotel located close to Caldea and Andorra centre. It offers free shuttle to the ski resorts which is a great advantage. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
$$ Exe Prisma: hotel with modern rooms located near Caldea and Andorra la Vella shopping area. Click here to see photos, availability and prices.
