Ultimate Patagonia Packing List

por Postcards from IvI

If you’re planning a trip to Patagonia there’s one thing you need to know from day one: the weather is unpredictable. You can have sun, wind, rain, and cold… all in the same day. In this guide, I’ll tell you what to wear in Patagonia.

Patagonia is enormous, and traveling to El Calafate is not the same as going to Bariloche or Ushuaia. The weather varies quite a bit depending on the region, the time of year, and, most importantly, the activities you plan to do.A relaxed city trip is very different from one focused on nature and trekking. This guide is designed as a general base, ideal if you’re planning nature routes, hikes, and outdoor excursions.

Weather in Patagonia by season

Before packing your suitcase, it’s essential to check the weather at your destination. Broadly speaking, here’s what to expect:

  • Summer (December to March):The best time for trekking. Days are long and temperatures are more pleasant (between 10°C and 20°C). Wind can be strong and the weather changes quickly. If you’re traveling to Bariloche in summer, you might even need to pack a bikini!
  • Autumn (April to June): Fewer tourists and stunning landscapes with fall colors. It starts getting colder and some trails may close.
  • Winter (July to September): Very cold, with snow and short days. Ideal for skiing or snowboarding, but not great for trekking.
  • Spring (October to November): Highly variable weather. You may get snow, rain, or sunny days. A good option if you’re looking to avoid crowds.

Patagonia Packing List

The most important rule: dress in layers. This allows you to easily adapt to changing weather conditions.

Basics

  • Trekking pants: comfortable, lightweight, and waterproof. Essential for hiking. Alternatively, you can use cargo-style pants.
  • Base layer: thermal clothing is key, especially in autumn or winter. I recommend good thermal leggings and tops. You can buy a thermal set like this one.
  • Mid layer: a fleece or wool sweater works well. A fleece like this one is perfect for everyday use.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket (ideally Gore-Tex): this is your outer layer, so it needs to be fully waterproof and warm.
  • Comfortable t-shirts for layering
  • Jeans or casual pants for relaxed days or city outings
  • Shorts: necessary if you’re traveling in summer
  • Underwear
  • Swimsuit: there are beaches in southern Argentina, and in summer you can swim in lakes

Footwear

Your shoes can make or break your trip:

  • Trekking shoes (preferably waterproof with good grip): highly recommended if you plan to hike. I use this Columbia boots and absolutely recommend them.

  • Sneakers: even if you’re not trekking, bring comfortable athletic shoes
  • Flip-flops

  • Sunglasses
  • Cap (essential for sun protection)

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Daypack for excursions
  • Lip balm
  • Toiletries and medications
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent (a must for trekking!)

Electronics

  • Portable charger

  • Phone and headphones

Tips for Traveling to Patagonia

  • Buy an eSIM before traveling. In many areas of Patagonia, signal is limited, but you’ll have coverage in towns and cities. Having data from the moment you land is key for maps and more. I always use HolaFly eSIM. With my code POSTCARDSFROMIVI” you get a 5% discount.
  • Check the weather daily (not just before your trip). It changes constantly.
  • Bring cash. While more places accept cards now, in many smaller or remote spots it’s still necessary.
  • Book in advance during high season. If you’re traveling between December and March, demand is high and prices rise quickly—make sure to secure your accommodation early.
