Andorra, that small country nestled between Spain and France, is famous for its ski resorts. But when the snow melts, the principality becomes a mountain paradise perfect for a holiday in touch with nature. Hiking, outdoor activities, gastronomy, and thermal waters are just the beginning. If you’re planning a trip, here’s everything you can do in Andorra during the summer.
Things to do in Andorra in Summer
1. Hiking
Trekking lovers will find marked trails and postcard-perfect landscapes: glacial lakes, green valleys, and majestic peaks. There are plenty of possible routes for all levels. Some recommended routes:
-
Estany de l’Estanyó in the Vall de Sorteny: A trek I did last summer and absolutely loved. You walk through the valley and along the river until you reach the Estanyó Lake. On the way back, I recommend stopping at the Sorteny Refuge for a meal — the restaurant has a terrace with an incredible view.
-
Estanys de Tristaina (Ordino): Ideal for a half-day hike with spectacular views. The trail to the Tristaina Lakes has a moderate difficulty level and is suitable for hikers of all levels.
-
Incles Valley: One of Andorra’s most beautiful natural areas, located between the villages of El Tarter and Canillo. From mid-June to early September, an electric train runs continuously from 9 AM to 6 PM to the end of the valley — perfect for families with children!
-
Estany de Juclà: This hiking route takes you to Juclà Lake, the largest lake in Andorra, located in the Incles Valley and surrounded by towering mountains.
2. Naturland
Summer is also a great time to visit Naturland, a park full of outdoor adventure activities. It’s located in Sant Julià de Lòria and offers activities such as:
-
Tobotronc (the longest alpine slide in the world)
-
Zip line circuits
-
Buggy or quad routes
-
Mini-golf and archery
It’s a very popular activity for families with kids, so it’s best to book in advance.
3. Roc del Quer Viewpoint
The Roc del Quer Viewpoint offers panoramic views of Andorra and is accessible by car. Located in Canillo, it features a 20-meter walkway (part of it suspended in mid-air!). Entry is free in winter, but in summer you need to book in advance.
4. Canillo Tibetan Bridge
Another interesting activity you can access from the Roc del Quer viewpoint parking area is crossing the Canillo Tibetan Bridge, the second longest in the world at 603 meters long!
It is one meter wide and reaches a maximum height of 158 meters above the Vall del Riu. It’s an amazing experience, though definitely not suitable for those with vertigo.
5. Visit Andorra la Vella
A visit to the capital and center of Andorra is always a good idea. You can stroll along its commercial streets, explore its shops, or take a guided tour to learn about its history.
6. Relax in the Largest Spa in Europe
A very popular activity in Andorra is visiting Caldea, the largest thermal spa center in Europe. It’s perfect when you’re looking for a more relaxing plan and a unique experience. In winter, tickets sell out fast, so make sure to book your Caldea visit in advance.
7.Visit Charming Villages
Andorra also has history and tradition. Its villages are very picturesque in the summer, featuring Romanesque churches like Sant Joan de Caselles or Santa Coloma, cobbled streets, and stone houses that blend beautifully with the natural surroundings.
8. Road and Mountain Cycling
Andorra is a favorite destination for cyclists. There are high mountain road cycling routes and over 200 km of marked MTB (mountain bike) trails. If you’re a fan of the sport, summer in Andorra is perfect.
9. Tax-Free Shopping
Andorra is known as a shopping destination. While for many years it was much cheaper to buy goods here, today most things are priced similarly to Spain. However, some products like alcohol, tobacco, perfumes, and luxury items are still slightly cheaper. The VAT is only 4.5%.
If you’re interested in shopping in Andorra, the main commercial areas are Avinguda Meritxell (Andorra la Vella) and the historic center of Escaldes-Engordany.
10. Summer Festivals and Events
During the summer months, Andorra hosts many cultural, sports, and music events such as the Andorra Mountain Music Festival (outdoor concerts with international artists) and local town festivals in Ordino, Encamp, or Canillo.
11. Other Outdoor Activities and Sports
If you’re adventurous, there are other more specific activities you can do in the summer in Andorra, such as canyoning, rock climbing, fishing, and kayaking.
